The “Display Driver has Stopped Responding and has Recovered” error is probably one of the most annoying PC problems I’ve ever bumped into in the past few years. After researching this unsolved problem for several days, I believe I finally found how to fix it.
There are several ways to handle this issue, but these are quite complex for the average PC user and are suitable for advanced PC users (involves editing your registry system, or messing with other Windows configurations…).
In a minute I’ll demonstrate a quick way that enables any PC user at any level to easily handle and repair this problem.
First of all, here is some important information about this error:
‘Suffering’ platforms:

Windows 7 32bit/64bit, Vista
‘Involved’ graphic cards:

Can be any card from any manufacturer, but here are known ‘involved’ graphic cards:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650/X1300/3870

Nvidia GTX 470/8600GT/QUADRO FX800M

NVidia GEForce 9800/GT 200/GT 220



But again, it can happen with any graphic card.



Typical problems:

You’ll usually get a ‘nice’ “Display Driver has Stopped Responding and has Recovered” error message together with a system freeze that may typically last anywhere between a few seconds up to 30 minutes, and afterwards everything will work fine. In some instances it even results with a BSOD crash (blue screen of death).
Causes:

It is still impossible to pinpoint the exact source to that error, but one thing is certain – it's a DRIVER problem! One of your drivers is either outdated/incompatible/obsolete.
And don’t get it wrong!
It isn’t necessarily your graphic card driver…it can be a motherboard driver, or any of your system or device drivers, or a combination of several drivers.
It is known for example that Windows Vista and Windows 7 automatic third party drivers update aren’t that successful and accurate, and known for causing all kinds of errors.
What to do?

Problem description:

For anyone interested in getting Paretologic’s PC Health Advisor license key, I suggest you to read what I’ve found after I purchased it. It is important for me to tell others what it is all about and if it can really help in fixing PC problems and other Windows glitches. I found something really interesting about it…I’ll tell you about that later.

I guess that you probably experience some kind of error(s) with your PC/Windows, whether it is an error message or maybe other general Windows problem, and you’ve probably heard that this tool can help you to fix that.
When I happened to come across that irritating dll error, I searched the web for a solution; there was a flood of information and tons of suggestions: “do this…”, “edit that registry record…”, “replace that file…”, come on people, I’m not a computer savvy and I’m not going to do all that, it sounds too risky…
Too risky from one hand and too expensive for a PC technician to repair from the other hand, I called one of my buddies who told me that he can try fixing that dll error, but he gently implied that he prefers to avoid that so if something goes wrong, I won’t be blaming him for that...
He suggested me to try and get a reliable errors repair tool and mentioned a few including Paretologic’s PCHA. I’ve installed it, ran a scan, it detected a bunch of dll errors. At that point it asked me for a license in order to repair those errors.
Anyway, I found someone on Facebook who gave me the following serial key:

It worked for me in the beginning, but after a while it got expired (you can try it on your machine, maybe it’ll work for you without expiring…)
Next I got a valid PC Health Advisor license key and it really fixed that problem, but that wasn’t the point that I wanted to tell you about…
The point was that it detected something else, a much worse problem that I didn’t even know about – a Malware (Malicious Software) that resides on my PC…(Where was my anti-virus program when I needed it?) it removed it immediately.
Warning! - don’t waste your time trying to find a free PCHA license, there isn’t such thing…and if so, it is probably illegal and might get you into trouble. (Getting a valid PC Health Advisor license key costs ‘peanuts’ and they provide free support for any problem that their tool hasn’t been able to repair).

The most important thing you should know when you get any error related to this file is that it concerns your USB hardware device.
What do we know of this file?

This dll file (Dynamic Link Library) enables one/several of your PC programs to directly access your USB device. This is done via compatible drivers of course.
Why do you get an ftd2xx.dll error?

There are 2 possible reasons. I’ll specify each reason and what you should do about it.
Drivers problem

This is the most common problem that causes this dll error.

(1) This dll file is either missing from your PC or it got corrupted

(2) It might be OK but it’s registration on Windows got corrupted
Something happened to one or more of your USB device drivers, and the easiest way to find out whether that is the case, is by conducting a drivers diagnostics and repair via an automated drivers scanner.
In a short period of time you’ll get a report about all your PC’s faulty drivers and you’ll be able to know whether something went wrong with your USB device drivers. If that is the case, then at that point you should enable this drivers repair tool to replace the faulty drivers with new ones.
It is critical not to try to manually update your faulty drivers or try to replace this .dll file by yourself. I’ve seen too many people installing incompatible drivers, thus causing additional errors. The solution that I’m about to tell you is going to save you several good hours of work.

(I’m making a little survey about the efficiency of this solution, so once you’ve finished applying it – post your comment below and let me know what you think of it).
What most users do whenever something serious goes wrong with their operating system (Blue Screens of Death, other crashes and system malfunctions, Windows errors of all kinds etc.) and after unsuccessfully trying all kinds of solutions offered in technical forums, is going to the last and most frustrating resort – reinstalling Windows.
What a headache!
Now go find that XP installation CD and the license key that came with it from a few years back… If you’ve found it then you’re ‘lucky’ and ‘all’ you need to know is how to reinstall Windows XP, right?
But the nightmare just starts here, especially if you’re clueless about installing operating systems. So many configurations…fixes and updates to download. Remember that reinstalling or using XP’s system repair, removes all updates you’ve previously installed and resets many of your preferred settings!

The following solution applies to both Windows XP Home/Professional.

Should it detect any problematic/corrupted sections/files/settings in your operating system that do not ‘fit’ to the optimal Windows XP ‘image’, it’ll automatically replace those parts with fresh and updated ones, pretty clever, isn’t it?
This way it fixes various Windows XP errors and problems.

If not, then your Outlook.pst file is most probably corrupted.
It is recommended to contact a professional data recovery lab or alternatively use the same data recovery tools that those labs are using in order to repair damaged and corrupted Outlook PST files. Important facts about Scanpst.exe

This Microsoft file is known as the ‘Inbox Repair Tool’ and it is already embedded together with your Windows installation. Its size is around 37K and its sole purpose is recovering a corrupted Outlook PST database file.
Locating that file in your Windows system

Unfortunately, detecting the Scanpst.exe location is a little tricky and differs from one Windows platform to another (Whether Windows XP, Vista, 7, 32bit or 64bit version) - watch the video above for exact guidance.
Can this 37K file completely recover your Outlook.pst file?

The answer is unfortunately and probably NO and I’ll explain why:



(1) Its biggest problem is that it is only able to repair damaged file headers, not the damaged data itself! Even worse – headers that it cannot repair are DELETED together with their associated data (Emails, Contacts, etc.)



(2) It won’t repair PST files approaching or exceeding 2GB size in earlier versions of Outlook



(3) According to Microsoft, if your PST data file couldn’t be accessed prior to using this tool then it won’t be able to completely recover all your data…



(4) So you finally find that Scanpst.exe location and you think that this is a ‘one click’ repair tool – take a look at the screenshot below – looks pretty simple to use, right? Wrong! After it ‘repairs’ your PST file it isn’t really ‘repaired’… ,you need to open Outlook and start a new frustrating ‘do this…copy that...’ procedure.




During that procedure you should notice a Lost and Found folder – it only contains items that the Scanpst.exe was able to recover and unfortunately according to Microsoft “items that are missing from the Lost and Found folder may be beyond repair…” - can you believe that?

This so powerful that as far as I understand professional Data Recovery services (who are aware of the situation) use this in order to recover corrupted Outlook PST files of desperate Outlook users and then charge hundreds for just pushing a button…

At some point, while using Outlook, unintentionally deleting a bunch of Emails happens to everyone… Fortunately recovering deleted Outlook Emails, and I mean messages that you’ve ‘permanently deleted’ is possible, but you must do it safely or you might end up reinstalling Windows…
I’ll explain more about it and I’ll show you how to avoid that and safely retrieve all your lost Email messages (even those whom you thought you’ve lost forever…)
Why using Microsoft’s solutions aren’t good and risky

While ‘digging’ the Web for ideas on how one can restore his/her lost emails, I’ve checked on what Microsoft are offering and I found that…
(1) If you don’t move Emails to your Deleted Items folder before deleting them, these messages are permanently deleted, and you cannot restore them.
(2) Items that are hard deleted in the Deleted Items folder cannot be recovered.
(3) To recover deleted Emails from mail folders other than the Deleted Items folder (Sent Items, Drafts, Outbox and Inbox folders) you need to modify your Windows registry!
Messing with the registry is quite risky especially for novice PC users, and Microsoft even warns you that “If you use the registry editor incorrectly, you might cause serious problems that might require you to reinstall your operating system.”
Bottom line: Microsoft’s solution is partial and more importantly – it is risky!

In a moment I’ll quickly guide you how to backup PST files automatically – I’m using this solution successfully for several years now and it’s absolutely free.
If you’ve reached this quick guide then I believe that there’s no need to explain why it is extremely important to frequently backup your precious Outlook PST file (personal storage folders).
Anyway, several years ago I started using an excellent backup tool (freeware) that enables me to automatically backup…

How to backup PST files automatically
Step-1: Close Outlook

Turn off your outlook application.
Step-2: Locate the path to your PST file

If you have no idea where your PST file is located on your PC, or if you can’t find the path to that file from some reason, then here is a little tip about how to find the location of a PST file.
Step-3: Install the Backup tool

Download and install this backup utility – it’s absolutely free!
Step-4: Create a new profile

You’ll need to create a new profile, call it “PST Backup”. You’ll then have to select the Source (original folder where your PST file is located) and Destination (the folder where you want to keep the backup of your PST file).



Step-5: Set Schedule

Select your new “PST Backup” profile, then click the Schedule icon and set the days and times of the week/month for the tool to automatically backup your PST file.
Note that Outlook must be turned off when a backup process takes place, so set it to days/times when you’re not using Outlook (late at night, weekend etc.)

Recovering deleted PST files is something that I’ve recently tested myself. I’m sure that the following quick guide can help all those Outlook users out there who accidently deleted their Outlook.pst file.
The following data recovery method is for those who never kept a backup of this file (PST backup), and who lost this file by ‘hard deleting’ it (either deleting it from the Recycle Bin, or by using the SHIFT+Delete keys), or by formatting their hard drive (freshly formatted!).
Well, whatever the reason is that caused your PST file to get deleted, there is a way out – you see, when a file is being deleted, it isn’t really deleted, it still resides somewhere on your hard drive.
However, over time the chances of restoring or ‘undeleting’ that file are getting smaller, as new data that is being written into your hard drive might be written over that file.
That’s why you need to act fast - as soon as you’ve lost that file.
Recovering deleted PST files

The easiest way to check whether your deleted Outlook PST file is retrievable and if so, being able afterwards to restore it, is by using a professional data recovery tool.
I conducted the following quick test:

(1) ‘Hard Deleted’ (SHIFT+Delete keys) a 2.06 GB Outlook.pst file (Called it: Outlook2.pst)

(2) Installed the following data recovery tool

(3) In the search box I typed: Outlook2.pst

(4) Clicked Start Scan (be patient here…)
It took it a while to scan my entire hard drive and detect the ‘hard deleted’ PST file, but then it notified me that the file is recoverable. Anyway, run a quick scan to see whether your PST file is recoverable, and if so, simply ask it to recover the entire lost file.
